e-Excise and Web Passport

e-Excise and the electronic excise stamp are changing the approach to digital identification and traceability of alcoholic products. A unique identifier and DataMatrix code make it possible to identify an individual unit of excisable goods and support control of its circulation.

At the same time, the producer can use its own product web passport as an additional digital layer for brand protection, product authenticity verification and interaction with the consumer.

Web passport technology does not replace or interfere with the e-Excise system. Both technologies can be used simultaneously on the same bottle and perform different but complementary functions.

e-Excise and a Web Passport: What Is the Difference?

e-Excise and the electronic excise stamp are intended for statutory identification, traceability and control of excisable products within the regulated circulation system.

A manufacturer or brand web passport creates an additional digital layer of protection for a specific product unit and provides a direct information channel between the brand and the consumer.

These technologies therefore do not compete with each other. They can operate in parallel: e-Excise performs regulatory identification and control functions, while the web passport extends the manufacturer's capabilities in brand protection, authenticity verification, quality communication and consumer engagement.

e-Excise DataMatrix and the Web Passport Digital Code

The electronic excise stamp uses a unique identifier and a DataMatrix code to identify a specific unit of excisable product.

A brand web passport can use its own QR code, DataMatrix code or another digital identifier linked to an individual online product page.

Implementing a web passport therefore does not require abandoning e-Excise marking. A bottle can simultaneously carry a statutory identifier and a manufacturer's digital identifier, with each serving its own purpose.

What Does a Web Passport Add to e-Excise?

A web passport can complement e-Excise with information and functionality that is particularly valuable to the manufacturer, brand and consumer:

  • verification of product authenticity directly through the manufacturer's or brand's digital resource;
  • an individual serial number for a specific bottle and its digital production history;
  • batch information, bottling date, product characteristics and quality-control data;
  • an additional hidden verification code, hologram, NFC tag or other security element;
  • monitoring of first activation and repeated verification attempts for the same digital identifier;
  • additional consumer information about the product, its origin, characteristics and storage conditions;
  • the ability to send feedback, notifications or information about suspicious products directly to the manufacturer;
  • integration with loyalty programs, promotional campaigns and other consumer-engagement mechanisms.

Multi-Layer Protection for Alcoholic Products

Several independent identification and protection layers can operate simultaneously on the same bottle:

e-Excise → statutory identification, traceability and circulation control of excisable products;
product web passport → digital brand protection, product authenticity verification, information access and consumer interaction;
security label, hologram, hidden code or NFC → an additional physical and digital authentication layer.

Where required, the web passport can also be integrated with production accounting, serialization, quality traceability, ERP, MES, WMS or CRM systems. This makes it possible to link the product's digital identifier with production, batch, quality-control, logistics and shipment data.

e-Excise + Web Passport = an Additional Layer of Protection

Combining the statutory e-Excise system with the manufacturer's own web passport does not duplicate functionality. Instead, it extends the capabilities of digital identification and product protection.

e-Excise provides the statutory layer of product identification and circulation control, while a web passport can additionally support brand protection, authenticity verification, repeated-scan monitoring, quality information and direct communication with the consumer.

The result is a multi-layer architecture: statutory traceability + brand protection + product authentication + a direct digital connection with the consumer.

This combination provides additional protection for the brand, the original product and the consumer without changing the purpose or operating principles of the e-Excise system.
